about
sally smith
Born in 1968, Smith lives on Waiheke Island, New Zealand. Having graduated from Auckland University with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1993 Smith practiced architecture with her own successful practice until 2010 from which point Smith chose to focus solely on her art practice.
Smith’s works explore the space between, around and through them as much as the material artwork itself. Both with her frameless wall installations which celebrate the idea of art having no boundaries and inhabiting the edges of architectural spaces through to her freestanding sculptural works.
Smith
has a particular interest in raising awareness of the fragility of our environment,
native flora and fauna and the role that we as guardians can play in ensuring
their survival. She has been involved with native bush regeneration projects
and pest eradication projects on Waiheke Island and this work informs much of
her work.
As Architect for Piritahi Marae, and later the Project Manager/Kaiwhakahaere for the dressing of Kia Piritahi, the marae whare whakairo, Sally is interested in how traditional practises eg kawa, tikanga translate into contemporary spaces off the marae.
Smith exhibits nationally and internationally and is represented in the USA, France and NZ/Aotearoa.
Smith works as a practicing artist with a history of curating and art project management as well as running her own art gallery for the past ten years. Her work is held in both public and private collections internationally.
